Abstract

Adolescence represents a critical developmental phase where self-esteem significantly influences mental health trajectories. This study addresses low self-esteem among orphanage adolescents, where limited emotional support impedes healthy self-concept formation. The purpose was to implement and evaluate strengths-based group counseling with digital booklet media in enhancing self-esteem at Siti Aisyah Orphanage Palembang. Employing qualitative case study design, six participants aged 13-17 years with low self-esteem scores participated in six-week structured intervention using the BANGKIT Model. Data collection utilized triangulation methods including questionnaires, participatory observation, interviews, and workbook analysis. The intervention integrated psychoeducation on character strengths, reflective activities, and peer support. Results demonstrated significant improvement with mean scores increasing from 40.67 to 62.50, yielding very large effect size (Cohen's d=2.1) and 100% retention. Transformation occurred across cognitive (deficit narratives to potential narratives), affective (83% negative to 67% positive emotions), and behavioral dimensions (83% initiating social interactions). Thematic analysis revealed five patterns: rediscovery of positive identity, transition from isolation to connection, transformed relationship with mistakes, internalized validation, and emergence of altruism. Digital booklets and workbooks created effective learning loops facilitating self-esteem internalization. The study concludes that strengths-based group counseling with digital media produces profound psychological transformation for orphanage adolescents. Recommendations include implementing monthly booster sessions, training counselors in BANGKIT Model, integrating programs into orphanage curricula, conducting longitudinal research, adapting for vulnerable populations, and developing mobile applications for enhanced accessibility.
